Contrary to what many people believe, Van Gogh did NOT cut off his whole left ear. Due to his mental state over his failing friendship with Paul Gauguin, in 1888 he stalked the artist for a night with a razor and ended up cutting off his lower left earlobe, wrapping in paper, and handing it to a prostitute!

This portrait parodied above was painted in 1889, yet still has his complete ear painted. So our comic here is accurate!
